The Bernkasteler Lay (Lay is an old term for slate; pronounced “LIE” in German) is located on the outskirts of Bernkastel on the right bank of the Mosel. The name refers to the soil of deep, weathered blue slate. This site has a somewhat gentler slope than the winery's other vineyards. It produces powerful, fruit-driven & complex dry wine, Classic fruit aromas, strongly reminiscent of apple and white peach, combine with floral, herbal and sometimes earthy aromas to create a very fascinating kaleidoscope of flavors. The Devonian slate shows a great variety of colors in the Mosel Valley, depending on its specific mineral composition. These different soil conditions, in combination with the specific climatic conditions, give the wine its distinctive aromas.
